Health and safety in construction at Kidbrooke Park School site by Mid-Kent Roofing

Congratulations are in order for one of our branches, Mid-Kent Roofing, who we are proud to report installed the architects specified Bauder roof system at a new £15 million building at Kidbrooke Park Primary School in Kidbrooke, London – a site which was awarded the prestigious Galliford Try Building Southern Safety Shield!

Royal Borough of Greenwich, who is investing £15 million to build a new state-of-the-art building for Kidbrooke Primary School, appointed their approved contractor Galliford Try to coordinate the large scale project.

The project is Mid-Kent Roofing’s first time working with Galliford Try, which makes the accomplishment even more significant as Mid-Kent Roofing look to further strengthen their relationship with the contractor going forward.

Steve Cayford, Flat Roofing Contracts Manager at Mid-Kent Roofing said:

“The project duration was carried out during the hottest part of summer installing a built-up felt roof system. The building is situated in one of the school’s existing playing field offering no shade from the heat. We had a tight deadline to achieve, which included the extreme weather and obvious COVID delays limiting staff levels, and still managed to hit the target date for the school’s topping out ceremony held on the finished roof, which included local Mayor, new headmaster, and a class of children.”

With Mid-Kent Roofing supplying a full-time supervisor on-site whose role included holding daily safety briefings and coordination meetings, the Galliford Try Building Southern Safety Shield win is clearly great testimony to the fact all staff have been observing the COVID-19 health and safety rules of the past year and practice the highest standards in health and safety in construction.

“Excellent” Health and Safety in Construction Culture

In fact, Matt Riley, Project Manager at the Kidbrooke Park Primary School Project, commented that the safety culture has been ‘excellent’ and was noticed by the Galliford Try Safety Officer and Directors during their visits to the Kidbrooke Park School site – so much so that the site was awarded the Galliford Try Building Southern Safety Shield for works within the 2nd quarter.

Matt said: “I’d like to thank you all for your efforts over the last few months, through trying times we have all been able to work together collaboratively and keep us on track for a handover at the early part of next year.

“Safety-wise we have been second to none. As supervisors, you have ensured that safety standards are being met and, in most circumstances, exceeded. Your communication and co-ordination with each other have been exemplary – long may it continue!”

He continued: “Thank you for all your efforts, it is greatly appreciated by myself and the GT site team, please continue leading from the front and ensuring that the Kidbrooke Park Project is a safe place to work.”

The aim is for the new building to replace the current facilities in 2021. The school will cater for 420 primary and 26 nursery pupils complete with a behavioural support unit that can host up to 18 children. A multi-purpose games area and changing block will be incorporated into the landscaped surroundings, along with habitat/forest, horticulture, and art areas.

Congratulations, Mid-Kent Roofing for coping well with the added pressure that COVID19 has placed upon you and dealing well with the restrictions the pandemic has put on construction work!
