We’re delighted to report that we have once again renewed our annual pledge to be Company Supporters of Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity for 2021.
The renewal means we have pledged £1000 to the charity, which provides vital mental, physical and financial wellbeing support to the construction community and their families – support that has undoubtedly been needed in 2020 more than ever.
According to Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity, two construction workers take their own lives in the UK every day, and stress, anxiety and depression are responsible for a fifth of all work-related illness. To combat these sad statistics, the charity provides a free 24/7 Construction Industry Helpline 0345 605 1956 and app that provides a wide range of information and guidance on a huge variety of wellbeing issues, including debt management, legal advice, and emergency financial aid.
As a company, we pride ourselves on being mental health aware, with many of our managers trained in mental health first aid. To offer support to employees and sub-contractors that might feel a little isolated during the lockdown period when they were on furlough and not in their usual work environment or routine, we send out regular links via text reminding everyone of the services that the Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity offer and the app to access advice.
By being a passionate corporate advocate for the cause, we are supplied with packs of helpline cards by Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity that we distribute to our nationwide workforce and advice posters to display at each of our 48 branch premises. We also benefit from free mental health and wellbeing training.
As well as financial support, our Area Director for Scotland, Chris McLean and Finance Director, Nick Tappin [pictured below] along with our Group SHEQ Manager, Sarah Burke raised extra funds for the Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity, with three members of staff cycling 100 miles around London and Surrey in the Prudential RideLondon event in August 2019, raising an incredible £913.75.
Of the renewal, our CEO, Eddie Stanton said: “I think now is a more crucial time than ever to renew support, given that we are heading into Christmas in such uncertain times for all. As a nationwide services provider, Avonside Group has a commitment to support organisations who prioritise construction workers’ health and wellbeing, and I’m proud to pledge our support to the Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity for another year.”
Meanwhile, Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity’s CEO, Bill Hill said: “Now, more than ever we need the industry to get behind our cause, so that we can look after our construction community. It is only with the ongoing support from organisations such as Avonside, that we can ensure that no construction worker or their family is alone in a crisis. Thank you to Avonside for stepping up to the mark.”
