The team at our Avonside Roofing Biggleswade branch has appreciated delivering roof tiling and leadwork for client Taylor Wimpey South Midlands at their Bidwell West, Thorn Fields site in Houghton Regis, Bedfordshire.
The £1.2m project, which began in November 2019, represents a significant long-term relationship between Avonside Group and Taylor Wimpey South Midlands, with the scheme still ongoing and Avonside Roofing set to be working on the site until 2025.
The site comprises 625 units, evenly split between private sales and Housing Association properties supported by Sage Wealth Management. Boasting an exceptional range of new two, three, and four-bedroom properties, Taylor Wimpey state that the homes have been designed with modern living in mind as many of the properties feature French doors that open onto the back gardens and open plan kitchen/dining areas.
Whilst Avonside Group’s Roofing division delivered on the roof tiling and leadwork front, laying both BMI Redland and Forticrete roof tiles and valley gutters, lead steps, and cover flashings, Avonside Group’s Energy division installed loft and cavity wall insulation to help boost the energy efficiency of the new build homes.
Something most of our fellow construction companies can attest to, material shortages have been an ever-present challenge during summer 2021. Pleasingly, our Biggleswade branch was able to overcome the shortage of batten by having a secure supply chain via our partners SIG plc. Strategic management was needed to take advantage of optimal timing and determine which roof was worked on when, ensuring that available products were efficiently utilised.
Despite initial supplier product issues, we are pleased to report that the scheme has earned the Site Manager, Nik Eason a coveted NHBC Pride in the Job Quality award for the Central Region – an accolade given only to the UK’s most outstanding Site Managers. Avonside Roofing are delighted to have worked with Nik and helped to contribute to the site’s success.
Accomplishments were enjoyed at all levels, with five Avonside Roofing operatives passing their SSSTS (Site Supervisors Safety Training Scheme) qualification and six roofers achieving their NVQ 2 in Roof Slate and Tiling (blue CSCS card equivalent). All the team members had been either assessed on the Thorn Fields site or involved on the site.
“Simon has been very, very helpful from the onset, as has the rest of his team, especially John Broomfield. Can’t fault them really. Avonside Roofing has been fantastic, particularly during this challenging period of materials shortages as they have been brilliant at forward planning and thinking ahead. They’ve become part of our team and are a good company. Thorn Fields is an important site for Taylor Wimpey, and we picked Avonside to work with for a reason. They’ve done and are continuing to do a great job.”
