Bracknell Roofing Ringmer (part of Avonside Group) was delighted to contribute expertise to provide services across four roofing disciplines: roof tiling, leadwork, flat roofing, and metal cladding for their client, Principal Contractor Lawrence Baker Ltd at Broadoaks Care Home in West Byfleet, Surrey.
Lawrence Baker Ltd is undertaking the work for Hamberley Developments (Ascot) Ltd, a luxury elderly residential nursing and specialist care home provider.
With Lawrence Baker’s Broadoaks Care Home in West Byfleet being situated in a location considered to be an exclusive area, the Phalempin clay weathered plain tiles were selected to be in keeping with the local area. A new estate is also being built nearby which will most likely utilise roof tiles with a similar/complementary look. The Phalempin clay plain tiles boast an attractive textured sand finish and thickness usually associated with expensive handmade clay tiles. They provided a sympathetic yet cost-effective solution, ideal for this project and its location.
Edilians (formerly IMERYS Roof Tiles) now manufactures the IMERYS Phalempin clay weathered plain tiles. IMERYS Toiture is a top French clay tile company, whose tiles are imported to the UK by Clay and Slate Roofing products and manufactured in France. The tiles were fixed and nailed according to the manufacturer’s specifications.
Broadoaks Care Home was the first project Bracknell Roofing Ringmer had worked on that used plain tiles due to the large size of the roof.
The roof featured many elements of interest, such as 30 metal clad dormers cheeks and fronts with tiled bonnet hips, a sunken flat roof, and lots of intricate bespoke carpentry details and interfaces that operatives had to account for. As a result, Bracknell Roofing Ringmer’s roofers had to liaise closely with the carpenters on site to check that everything was per the site drawings and specifications, as well as the usual collaboration with scaffolding contractors and other trades to ensure the smooth delivery of works.
This project involved four different roofing disciplines: roof tiling, leadwork, flat roofing, and metal cladding and Bracknell Roofing Ringmer were proud to be able to supply the skilled and experienced operatives needed for all four specialties, whilst also investing in the development of more junior staff members, with three trainees currently completing their Level 2 NVQ in roof slating and tiling working on the site.
Due to the wide range of skills used on-site and the scale of the project, Bracknell Roofing Ringmer has entered the project into the ‘Best Use of Clay and Concrete Tiles for a Commercial Project’ category at the 2021 Pitched Roofing Awards, hosted by RCI Magazine.
We are pleased to report that all roofing works were completed within the designated timeframe of the beginning of February – 17th June 2021 (the rest of the project is still ongoing), within budget and to the Principal Contractor Lawrence Baker’s satisfaction.
COVID risk management measures were followed, waste was disposed of responsibility with the appropriate segregation, and health and safety regulations were adhered to.
“Myself and my colleagues have enjoyed working with Bracknell Roofing. They have been very reactive and responsive to all our needs. We have a good working relationship with them, which the Broadoaks Care Home project has only helped to strengthen. They’ve consistently delivered high-quality work, which has been complemented by all visitors to the site, including the client team.”
