Avonside Group were delighted to deliver award-winning results when we installed a new energy-efficient roof system and in-roof solar PV system, as well as four solar storage batteries at a home in Low Meadow, Barkisland in Halifax alongside Prime Energy Systems.


The energy-efficient project recently won in the ‘Best Use of a Solar PV or Solar Thermal System’ category at RCI Magazine’s Pitched Roofing Awards. The judges commented: “This project has been well thought out and executed, as it makes the most of the sun from the early morning, through until the late afternoon.

“Not only does the installation offer an aesthetic impact, but also great cost-saving benefits to the customer too, as they can utilise the PV energy to power their vehicles.”

Project Objectives

The customer wanted a system that would make it more economical to charge his electric vehicle at his West Yorkshire property. After having a vehicle charger installed, he wanted to make sure that the surplus energy generated from the solar PV system could be stored and used to charge his car during the evening.

Products Used

In-roof Viridian Solar panels were chosen for the solar PV panel installation as they are discrete and visually pleasing. Specifically, it was Viridian Clearline Fusion solar panels that were used because they have an in-roof system that is the same colour as the thin leading-edge tiles that were installed as part of the re-roof.

The customer really wanted virtually black tiles with a thin leading edge, so Condron Senior tiles were utilised to give the desired effect. Fortunately, the colour was also an exact match for the Viridian Solar system.

Due to the property being located directly under high power cables and a large pylon, a special risk assessment was needed, with extra caution being taken when the scaffolding was erected.

The Results

The installation of four batteries, which equated to 10kWh of storage capacity, maximised the customer’s charging potential and import reduction.

The solar PV panel installation team maximised the south-facing elevation and the east-facing elevation with solar PV panels so that the customer could generate power in the morning until late into the afternoon which is when he wanted the maximum charging potential for his electric car.

The successful project was completed over a four-week period, on time and to budget.
